Deputy Chief of General Staff General Ümit Dündar announced that the coup attempt had been rejected by the command chain of the Turkish Armed Forces right from the start. According to Dündar, a total of 1,563 soldiers were arrested and 104 people were captured dead. There were 90 martyrs – 47 civilians, 41 police officers and two soldiers – and 1,154 injured people. Dündar said, “We are determined to clear the members of the parallel structure from the Turkish Armed Forces.”

FETÖ / Parallel State Structuring (PDY)-member putschist soldiers demanded negotiations to surrender. When their demands were rejected, they started surrendering. As part of preparations for an operation, first the surroundings of the General Staff Headquarters were evacuated and then soldiers from the Special Operations and Special Forces were deployed to the area. During the operation that was initiated after these preparations, putschist soldiers at the General Staff Headquarters were detained.

In the same minutes, Istanbul Police Chief Mustafa Çalışkan said, “The ringleader is there,” and ordered to launch an operation on the Topkule Barracks towards the morning. The gate of the barracks was closed by construction vehicles. Putschist soldiers clashed with the police for five hours. A total of 250 soldiers surrendered at 11:30 a.m. After taking off the upper part of their uniforms, soldiers were handcuffed behind their backs and detained.
