Ali Mehmet Vurel was martyred by putschist soldiers on the night of July 15th, when he was celebrating his son’s admission to become a specialized sergeant.
Initially hearing about the events from his soldier son, he went out after a phone call from his friend. When his wife Reyhan asked where he was going, he replied, “The captain is calling. This is our people, this is our country.” First he went to the parliament and called his wife, “There are a lot of conflicts at the parliament.” This was Vurel’s last contact with his family.
Reyhan found out about her husband’s martyrdom at the hospital where she was taken to by her aunt at 03:00. Seeing her husband’s body, Reyhan Vurel said,” He had such a beautiful face. Three of his friends that he went out with died, one was wounded.”
He had to give up on his dream of becoming a soldier
Dreaming of becoming a soldier since his childhood, Ali’s son Deniz passed the exams for becoming a specialized sergeant in February. Passing the interviews, Deniz was going to become an infantry commando. Ali wanted his son to become a soldier too. His only aim was to serve the country and nation, yet, after his father became a martyr, he had to give up on his dream to take care of his mother and two sisters.
Ali was 42 years old and had three children when he was martyred. He was buried in his hometown of Yozgat on July 17th, Sunday.
The name Martyr Ali Mehmet Vurel’s was given to an Anatolian imam hatip high school in Çayıralan, Yozgat.
