Turkish-origin basketballer Enes Kanter accused of insulting Recep Tayyip Erdoğan

A public prosecutor on Wednesday demanded a jail term of up to four years and eight months for a Turkish-origin basketball player accused of insulting Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.

The Chief Public Prosecutor's Office in Istanbul prepared an indictment after Erdoğan’s lawyer filed a complaint against Enes Kanter on June 17, 2016.

Kanter, who lives in the U.S., is accused of insulting the Turkish president via his posts on Twitter.

After the July 2016 defeated coup attempt, Oklahoma City Thunder player Kanter wrote on social media that he was openly supporting Fetullah Gülen -- the U.S.-based leader of Fetullah Terrorist Organization (FETÖ) which orchestrated the defeated coup of July 2016, which left 250 people martyred and nearly 2,200 injured.
