Chancellor Scholz's SPD and main opposition Christian Democrats have reached agreement on early election date, according to media reports

Germany's governing parties and the main opposition have reached an agreement to hold early elections on Feb. 23, 2025, according to local media reports.Chancellor Olaf Scholz's Social Democratic Party (SPD), its coalition partner the Greens, and the main opposition Christian Democrats (CDU/CSU) have reached an agreement on the early election date during their negotiations in Berlin, German press agency DPA reported. The agreement came less than a week after the collapse of Scholz's left-liberal coalition government due to disputes with the liberal Free Democrats (FDP) over economic policy. Scholz suggested last week he could call for a vote of confidence in January, opening the way for early elections in March. However, the opposition Christian Democrats insisted that early elections should be held in February at the latest. Following this compromise, the final decision on the election date will rest with President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, who plays a crucial role in the process of dissolving parliament and setting new elections.
