Egyptian soccer star Mohamad Salah stated that he does not intend to break his fast on the day of the UEFA Champions League final as Liverpool is set to take on Real Madrid on May 26 in the Ukrainian capital.

When asked whether Salah can be exempted from fasting on the day of the final match by a fatwa, or Muslim religious edict, Egyptian cleric Yasser Burhami said that there was no verse in the Quran that says footballers can break their fast, noting that sports don’t count as “hard labor.”

The time for iftar in Kiev, or the fast breaking meal at sunset, is only half an hour before the final.

Salah stated that he intends to maintain his fast for 30 days, or the duration of the holy Muslim month of Ramadan.

“I will definitely fast. I will fast for 30 days. All these successes were predestined to me by Allah’s orders.”
