Paris urges cities hosting Euro 2016 matches to ban alcohol near venues and fan zones, to deter violence

The French government has urged the cities hosting Euro 2016 matches to ban alcohol near venues and fan zones as a measure against any other possible violent incidents as France has already witnessed for three days since the beginning of Euro 2016.

The move came after the three-day clashes between different fans groups and security forces.

French Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve said that the ban will include public areas, as well as shops.

Senior local officials can also ban bars and cafes from serving drinks on their terraces in containers that could be used as missiles.

"The events which took place in Marseille are unacceptable. Unacceptable for the authorities, for society and football lovers," the minister said.

A number of England fans were taken to hospital in France following a series of clashes between football supporters in Marseille on Saturday along with some other violent incidents that occurred in Nice province of France.

The incidents included throngs of rival supporters rushing at one another, hurling bottles, chairs and other objects, and forcing police in riot gear to fire tear gas to disperse the violent crowds.
