France's famed Arc de Triomphe monument became the centrepiece for the opening leg of the Drone Champions League as 36 pilots weaved their aircraft through an obstacle course featuring the Parisian landmark.

The small remote-controlled drones sped through a 600 metre (1,970 feet) tunnel below the Arc on Sunday before racing through and around inflatable aerial obstacles at speeds of over 100 km/h (62 mph), while a large crowd watched from behind barriers.

Germany's Niklas Solle from Team Flyduino KISS Racing emerged victorious in the opening leg of the six-event Drone Champions League, which will next head to Austria in August.

"I'm just really happy about how it went and it's an amazing event with a lot of people and we didn't expect to win but we did, so we're just really, really happy," Solle said.
