Doctors Without Borders on Monday suspended its activities in Burkino Faso's northern Djibo region due to escalating security concerns.
The decision came after recurring incidents targeting health centers, and water distribution points.
“We need adequate security conditions to allow our teams to continue their mission and provide support to communities trapped by insecurity and violence,” said Moussa Ousman, a program manager of the humanitarian group.
Ousman expressed hope that the security situation will improve, providing them with better guarantees for the protection of the team members and activities to resume support for Djibo.
The NGO prioritizes the safety of its staff and allows them to reassess working conditions, given the growing difficulty of providing humanitarian medical assistance.
The aid teams continue to provide humanitarian assistance in several regions of the country, with 348,477 consultations carried out. More than 3,120 mental health patients have been treated, and nearly 72 million liters of water have been distributed during the first half of this year.
The group calls for security of health care facilities, displaced people, and humanitarian missions.
