Ahmed Al-Sharaa met Ahmed bin Abdulaziz Al Khalifa at People's Palace in Damascus, says official Bahrain News Agency
A Bahraini security official met Saturday with Ahmed Al-Sharaa, leader of the new Syrian administration in Damascus, reaffirming Manama's support for a comprehensive transitional process in Syria.
The Bahrain News Agency (BNA) said Al-Sharaa met at the People's Palace in Damascus with Ahmed bin Abdulaziz Al Khalifa, the head of Bahrain's Strategic Security Agency where "views were exchanged on issues of mutual interest.”
Bin Abdulaziz emphasized "the importance of maintaining regional security and underscored Bahrain's support for a comprehensive transitional process in Syria to promote national reconciliation, economic recovery, and humanitarian assistance for the Syrian people."
The meeting also highlighted “Bahrain's statement issued on December 25, supporting the voluntary return of Syrian citizens to contribute to rebuilding their homeland, ensuring its stability, and meeting the aspirations of the Syrian people.”
Bin Abdulaziz's visit to Damascus “came within the framework of Bahrain's presidency of the current Arab Summit session and its commitment to developing Arab unity and fostering constructive dialogue for stability and prosperity in Syria,” according to the Bahrain News Agency.
Bashar Assad, Syria's leader for nearly 25 years, fled to Russia after anti-regime groups took control of Damascus on Dec. 8, ending the Baath Party's regime, which had been in power since 1963.
The takeover came after Hayat Tahrir al-Sham fighters captured key cities in a lightning offensive that lasted less than two weeks.
