I can hardly bring myself to say “Turkish citizen” and associate Zionists with Turkish identity. However, there are many Zionism supporters in our country. One of them, who has been the focus of our reactions since yesterday, is the writer Azra Kohen. Based on her surname, we thought she was Jewish, but she stated that she comes from a Muslim family. Her religion does not concern us. What concerns us is her conscience and stance against the genocide in Gaza.

Azra Kohen’s husband is Jewish, and her “Kohen” surname comes from him. Without straying too far from the topic, it’s worth noting that the “Kohen” surname holds a significant status in Judaism. The Torah grants important privileges to Kohens. In an interview where he recounted his journalism career in the Turkish press, the late Jewish journalist Sami Kohen highlighted the power of their surname: “Religiously, it’s very important. Being a Kohen means being ‘first among equals.’ You are at the top. Kohens bless people. While blessing the community, everyone stands with bowed heads and doesn’t look at us.”

In my research for this article, I learned that Kohens lost their significant status in Judaism years ago; requirements like being a clergyman and not allowing men to marry non-Kohen women have been relaxed. This flexibility seems to have allowed ‘Azra Sarızeybek,’ who comes from a Turkish and Muslim family, to marry IT specialist Sadok Kohen.

What has brought Azra Kohen into the spotlight is not her surname, her writing, or her appearing on TV channels as a “psychologist” despite her applied psychology education. The genocide in Gaza has been ongoing for eight months, and Israel is relentless, now bombing the camps in Rafah where displaced civilians have taken refuge. They burned down shacks from the air, burning children alive. Babies were decapitated in the attacks. The world is up in arms. Even those who supported Israel or ignored the genocide in Gaza out of fear of Israel could not remain silent in the face of the latest atrocities. It’s evident that besides the staunch Zionists, Israel has no one left supporting it. Jews who do not support Israel have become too ashamed to go out in public in their respective countries and regions.

During these damned times, Turkish citizen Azra Kohen, in an Instagram comment, essentially cleared Israel of its crimes against humanity and slandered the parents of babies who burned to death in the shacks they had taken refuge in. Her words were: “I wish the eradication of anyone capable of taking their child to a place where a bomb will be dropped, announced via megaphone three hours in advance, sitting them there, and recording videos from a corner.”

Mrs. Kohen, with a perspective and courage surpassing even the Israel-supporting, Palestine (Arab) hating group that starts their sentences with “but Hamas” after October 7, openly supported Zionist terror. She went further, covering up the atrocities committed by Israel. This is precisely how the Zionist mind operates.

Azra Kohen has inflicted a new trauma on everyone from all religions, views, and understandings who have been repeatedly shattered, witnessing the atrocities over these eight months of genocide, experiencing unimaginable levels of pain, feeling ashamed of their humanity, and losing the meaning of life.

Yes, this is too much! People already feeling the profound shame of being spectators to the events in Gaza should not have to endure Azra Kohen’s “genocidal thoughts.” Law, justice, human rights, universal values, and societal conscience must urgently take measures against such crimes. I mentioned in a previous article that the rage accumulating in the streets against Israel is looking for an outlet.

For instance, the issue of Turkish citizens joining the Israeli army after October 7 is becoming a primary source of civil anger. This topic has been on the agenda for eight months, but officials have not made any statements. Complaints filed against two Turkish women who announced their enlistment in the Israeli army on social media were not processed. The prosecutor’s office decided there was “no need for prosecution.” Later, there were reports that their statements would be taken, but when we checked the case number, it turned out to be an unrelated case.

As emphasized during our press statement with members of the Palestine Initiative in Saraçhane the other day; “Turkish citizens who are soldiers in the Israeli army are a threat to Turkey. Zionist Turkish citizens, Israeli soldiers, must be prosecuted immediately! Why has no action been taken against these Zionist terrorists for seven months?”

Meanwhile, our lawyer friends in the Palestine Initiative, international lawyer Hatice Beyza Öztürk, reminded us of the provision in the Turkish Citizenship Law on revocation of citizenship, which states, “Those who voluntarily serve in a foreign state's military without permission may lose their citizenship by a decision of the President.”

I should also express here; the new focus of anti-Israel agenda and actions will be the Zionist Turkish citizens. Because we do not want “Zionist citizens” in our country.

Azra Kohen is also a Zionist. Empowered and emboldened by her surname, she continues to attack the parents of murdered children and the entire Palestinian people even in her supposed defense.

Many of our prosecutors, who launch ex officio investigations at lightning speed when something becomes a social media agenda, had not taken action by the time I submitted this article. This leaves us no choice but to take action ourselves; my friends and I will file a criminal complaint against Azra Kohen. Let this be known.
